10 SUVs for the American in you

Bria Martinez

For every driver who desires a powerful drive, a sports utility vehicle (SUV) has been the most obvious thing on the mind. And, for years, they have been looked at for their large capacity engines, space, and comfort. However, a lot has changed in the recent past.

Most people opine that SUVs are too big, guzzle gas, and not very easy to maintain. So, automakers, paying heed to public opinion, have downsized some of the larger cars coming from their stable. Smaller, compact SUVs today make up for 40 percent of car sales in the US.

Where are our SUVs made?
So, where are these vehicles coming from? According to the American University’s Kogod School of Business, approximately 65% of cars sold in the US in 2016 were mostly “Made in America.”

That being said, buying an all-American car is a myth today. Several foreign carmakers manufacture their best vehicles here in America, while several domestic names have massive factories outside the country.

10 SUVs for you

Honda Passport
The first surprise, Honda has been producing cars for our country for decades now. About 70% of its components are sourced locally, making it quite the American creation. Powered by a V-6 engine, the Passport is all about space and a pleasant driving experience.

Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class
What is a German car doing on this list? As it turns out, 69% of the GLE’s parts are from the US (or Canada), making it a compelling American German luxury SUV. The luxury SUV comes with plush interiors, offers a top-of-the-class ride and a lot of interior and cargo space. It is assembled in Alabama.

Jeep Cherokee
One of the best-selling models of Jeep, this vehicle’s standard and turbo-charged cylinders are made in Michigan. The Cherokee is approximately 70% American parts vehicle, and it comes from a brand that has been around for decades now.

Cadillac XT5
Available in three trims, the new XT5 is built in Tennessee. It could be on your list if you are looking for a regional-made safe SUV.

2021 Chevrolet Traverse
Made in the GM’s Lansing Delta Township plant, this one has a 310 hp V6 engine, nine-speed automatic transmission, and is largely efficient to drive. Its infotainment touchscreen offers several options, and the vehicle is available in front-wheel or all-wheel variants.

Volkswagen Atlas
Very few vehicles in its class offer the roomy third-row that the VW Atlas manages. The car is a great mid-sized SUV with several safety features made in Volkswagen’s plant in Tennessee.

Dodge Durango
Another great mid-sized SUV, the powerful Durango, is made in dear old Detroit. The vehicle packs a fantastic V6 engine under its hood and is reliable. It can also tow up to 8700 pounds!

Tesla Model Y
In terms of design, the Model Y looks similar to its sedan sibling- the Model 3. But, this one comes with additional utility. The performance is unquestionable: however, this variant falls flat in the interiors aspect. The Model Y is 55 percent domestic and made in California.

Ford Explorer 3.0
A twin-turbo Eco-boost V-6 engine equips the Ford Explorer with extraordinary power. It offers a decent package of features, good safety, a comfortable ride, and ample cargo space. Ford builds it in Illinois.

Hyundai Santa Fe
Hyundai has always done well in packing features in all its variants. It does the same with Santa Fe. A top-performing mid-sized SUV, the Santa Fe is also great value-for-money. It is built in Alabama, unlike some of the other Hyundai SUVs that are manufactured in South Korea.
