5 affordable electric vehicles

Dwight Fields

In 2020, there were close to 300,000 electric vehicles (EVs) sold in the country. One look at the numbers, and it is evident that sales of EVs have not exactly taken off yet. However, the future looks promising. Studies show that, by 2025, sales could touch 1 million. The new government is doing everything in its might to push the popularity of EVs in the country. So, EVs could be taking over the streets quite sooner than expected.

Since they are expected to be much cleaner and more fuel-efficient than their gas counterparts, a factor to keep in mind whilst considering electric cars is Miles Per Gallon Equivalent (MPGe). It is a useful metric to evaluate the efficiency of cars that run on alternative fuels (including electricity).

Here’s a list of electric cars with a good MPGe rating, decent price tag, and great driving experience.

Volkswagen ID.4
The German automobile giant is leaving no stone unturned in accomplishing its target of selling 1 million EVs by 2023. In the country, it saw great success with the launch of the first edition of ID.4. The 82kWh battery pack gives the ID.4 a range of 250 miles between charges. The ID.4 Pro comes with a rear-mounted motor and is priced at USD 41,190. 20-inch wheels and a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen assure a comfortable and entertaining drive. The car sits at 97 MPGe.

Hyundai Kona Electric
If you are looking for a car that pretty much has it all, this is probably the one. Stylish exteriors, ample interiors, a good driving range, and the trademark warranty make the Hyundai Kona a great car. With a generous 120 MPGe, you can rest assured of good fuel efficiency. It offers a good 258 miles between charges and is very reasonably priced at USD 38,330. Buy the Kona Electric if you are looking for sheer efficiency and comfort.

Chevrolet Bolt EV
Except for its tiny body that is typical of a hatchback, the Chevrolet Bolt EV is value-for-money. The car, with an updated battery pack of 66 kWh, provides a range of 259 miles and a 118 MPGe. The interiors are spacious for a hatchback, and there is a surprisingly sufficient amount of cargo space. At a base price of nearly USD 37,495, this is a good car for those who need a quick, hassle-free drive within the city without burning a hole in the pocket.

Tesla Model 3
Tesla’s electric cars have made the EV market desirable. It is stylish, offers a fantastic range of 250 miles between charges (the Standard Range Plus model), 134 MPGe, and accelerates quickly (0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds)- all for USD 41,190. Tesla has done everything right with this car, and it continues to be the flag-bearer of a fast-emerging EV market in the country.

Ford Mustang Mach-E
This EV from Ford is available in base and premium models, with the latter boasting a range of 305 miles, which is bolstered by the extended-range battery and a rear-wheel drive. This EV has a spacious, feature-packed cabin that has a 15.5-inch infotainment touchscreen. The storage and cargo options do not disappoint either. Starting at USD 43,995, the Ford Mustang Mach-E offers value for money.

The electric cars market is still quite nascent, but as the world looks at marrying technology and automobiles, the future of EVs is very bright. It is because these vehicles have newer features, robust technology, lesser emissions, and offer an enjoyable driving experience. If you haven’t already, start looking out for your next automobile purchase. It could be an EV!
